| Cynicism - it's the future |
[Feb. 10th, 2009|11:05 pm] |
Call me a grumpy old man , but the older I get the less inclined I am to tolerate the sort of piddling crap that I wouldn't have worried about 2 or 3 years ago. Take work, for example.
Over the past couple of years more and more "staff engagement inititaves" have been dumped on us at work, all of which have one thing in common - no one gives a rats ass about them. Of course, if you so much as say that then you're considered as being "negative" or "dismissive", but then again the people who say that are the ones who come up with the fucking idesa in the first place and, tellingly, who are building their careers on this bollocks. They (including my manager who is a complete muppet) try and tell you that making waves will affect the way people look at you, and not in a good way.
But as I get older, I'm starting to wonder if being thought of as a troublemaker isn't such a bad thing. At some point I'll get to the stage where telling these self-serving fucktards exactly how useless they actually will actually be worth the price. |

[May. 9th, 2008|10:15 pm] |
So, this thing is still going. And after 6 months absence I thought I might post something.
Those few of you who read this may be wondering where I've been and what I've been doing. Well dear reader, what I've been doing is getting heavily involved and that most hideous and addictive of substances known as a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Roll Playing Game to the uninitiated). More specifically I've been involved in what would be considered tha Class A drug of this dark undrculture, and that is World of Warcraft.
Like all monstrous addictions it started as a brief dabble from a free trial around 2 years ago. You know how it goes. You think you can give it up anytime you like, but then it just gets harder and harder to kick the habit. Alas, I fear that I'm beyond any redemption but at least I don't have to read the crap in TNZ anymore.
For those of you really interested in knowing what I'm up to in WoW, I'm currently in an end-game raiding guild on the Darkspear EU realm. Here's a link to our site http://www.deathsworn.com/
See you all in 6 months

I doubt anyone will ever read this. Truth be told I don't keep in touch with the old bulletin board crowd anymore, having found another (but equally nerdy) pasttime in the shape of World of Warcraft. Still, it would be interesting to see if anyone does reply before I "go dark" again for another protracted period of time.
Anyway, on to the reason I've decided to post this. Over the past several months I've been thinking more and more about decisions made in the past, and not all of them by me, that have had consequences on my life. I won't bore you with the details, but while most of these have been beneficial to me, I've come to realise that one particular decision made was wrong and has had an impact on my life. Not that I'm incredibly unhappy or anything (quite the opposite), but there is one thing I should have fought against that I didn't at the time, and now I have some gentle regrets on that score.
Those of you who do read this may wonder where I'm going with my ramblings. Well, dear reader, I don't know myself so don't expect any insight's or revelations. But if the same situation crops up again, I'll do more to make sure the outcome is different. |

I'm getting more than a little pissed off with the problems with TrekBBS. Hopefully this latest round of maintenance will fix the problems. If not I wouldnt be surprised if there wil be a steady stream of Premium Members asking for their money back. And I couldnt say I blame them either.

I'm getting a new PC. More details when it arrives. |

 | You scored as XIII: Death. Death is probably the most well known Tarot card - and also the most misunderstood. Most Tarot novices would consider Death to be a bad card, especially given its connection with the number thirteen. In fact this card rarely indicates literal death.Without "death" there can be no change, only eventual stagnation. The "death" of the child allows for the "birth" of the adult. This change is not always easy. The appearance of Death in a Tarot reading can indicate pain and short term loss, however it also represents hope for a new future.

| Crappy ISP's and DSN issues. |

| | annoyed | ] | Okay, since TrekBBS moved servers I've not been able to get on the board, and I think it's down to a DSN issue. However I cant be 100% certain as my DSN cache doesnt seem to want to flush out, no matter how many times I try. It may be someting to do with Wanadoo (my ISP) changing their name to Orange, but yet again I can't be certain.
What I do know is that I hate my PC and ISP in equal measures. Bloody technology. |

| Consistency. |
[Apr. 19th, 2006|09:00 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | frustrated | ] | Just had my appraisal at work today, which is always fun. Of course, I passed (I'm good at my job), but there was one thing that came out of the process that I feel is important in all aspects of life. That is the importance of consistency.
You see, I'm a manager in my work. I'm responsible for a team of 9 people and part of my duties are to deal with their performance and attendance. To do that, I have to follow a set of rules. More importantly, I have to follow those rules consistently. I can't decide to change those rules according to my own personal whim, and I certainly can't pick and choose which members of my team those same rules apply to. Neither can my colleagues who manage other teams.
Of course this means that I sometimes have to make tough decisions, but that comes with the job. Hell, it comes with any role in life where you are responsible for upholding a set of rules. To do othwerwise is a sign that you're not up to the job and that you lack substance.
Especially if you mask that substance with style. |

| | contemplative | ] | I had one of those strange win/lose situations today. When I got up, I decided to check my lottery ticket and discovered that I'd actually one something for the first time in months. Ok, it was only 10 quid, but a win's a win as they say. However the mouse on my PC just happened to choose today to finally die on me, so that tenner had to be spent on a replacement. At least I realised this before I went into town to do some shopping rather than afterwards. Anyway, I've now got a new mouse. Nothing fancy, just a standard optical mouse (with a navigation wheel and 2 buttons).
One good thing though. I've finished all my Christmas shopping and there's still nearly 4 weeks to go until the holiday. A personal record. |

[Nov. 23rd, 2005|08:33 pm] |
Today was that time of the year again where I get my annual flu vaccination As some of you know, I'm in the one of the at risk groups (I have no spleen - long story) which means I can get an annual jab on the NHS without feeling guilty. Unlike those who are panicing about Avian flu after reading to many tabloid news papers, but I digress.
Anyway, I'm at the health centre getting my innoculation and the nurse tells me that I'm overdue for my pneumococcas booster (which I also have due to the aforementioned lack of a spleen), and she decided that I should have one today. 4 hours later and both my arms are sore as hell.
Stiil, it's better than catching flu or pneumonia....I think. |

John Wayne You scored 47% Tough, 4% Roguish, 19% Friendly, and 28% Charming! |
You, my friend, are a man's man, the original true grit, one tough talking, swaggering son of a bitch. You're not a bad guy, on the contrary, you're the ultimate good guy, but you're one tough character, rough and tumble, ready for anything. You call the shots and go your own way, and if some screwy dame is willing to accept your terms, that's just fine by you. Otherwise, you'll just hit the open trail and stay true to yourself. You stand up for what you believe and can handle any situation, usually by rushing into the thick of the action. You're not polished and you're not overly warm, but you're a straight shooter and a real stand up guy. Co-stars include Lauren Bacall and Maureen O'Hara, tough broads who can take care of themselves.

| [ | Current Music |
| | Coldplay - White Shadows | ] | No, this has nothing to do with the ghost in Harry Potter. Instead it is the first of a (long) list of things that annoy me. I don't mean the major issues like work, being stuck in traffic or having to much month left at the end of the money. Neither do I mean the issues of personal taste such as which version of Star Trek you prefer (although 'shippers may make it on the list). No gentle reader, I mean those little things that, while initially appearing innocuous to most people, cause me to grind my teeth together and raise my blood pressure whenever I encounter them.
The first of this list is a particular Americanism that seem's to be infecting the English speaking world. Now we all know those crazy Yanks have spent the last 228 years butchering our language with their strange spellings and grammer, but most of those I can ignore. Some are just plain odd, such as "fawcet" when they really mean "tap", or calling a "pavement" a "sidewalk" and a "road" a "pavement". And I can even forgive them removing the letter "u" from many common words (colour, favour, flavour etc.). Thats just quaint, and is easily forgiveable because they don't know any better, bless 'em.
But there is one word that really, REALLY, pisses me off. Can someone tell me what the fuck a "co-worker" is? Is it anything similar to a "colleague", and if so why don't you use the proper word? I really, really hate that. It's a blatant sign of the dumbing down that is infecting our language, and I for one vow never to use that abomination in any context other than a derogatory one.
Enough for now. # 2 in a long list shall follow at a later date. |

| | accomplished | ] | After my last, somewhat despondent entry, things have moved on somewhat. I've now been offered a position in one of our contact centres which, while not being the ideal job, will do for now. The thing is, I'm convinced that I wouldnt have been offered anything if I'd have just sat back and left it. I'd sent an extremely snotty email to our Human Resources Group (who are all incompetent, fucktards of the highest order) asking some very difficult questions, with the threat of going up the food chain if they didnt reply.
A few days later, the phone rings and they offer me a job. Coincidence? Maybe, but then again...... |

| | crushed | ] | Well, it's happened yet again. For the nth time (lost count ages ago, but I'm thinking double figures on this one) I've not got posted off the promotion list. Technically, I suppose I could get somethig, but with only 2 days before the list closes, I'm not holding my breath. Honestly, the way that the IR treats it's staff is fucking atrocious.
Of course, what really annoys me is that I'm currently working in the higher grade, and have been doing for the best part of 3 years (on and off). Any decent organisation would give me the fucking job, but not our lot. The perceived wisdom is that having done a job for any length of time doesn't mean that you are beter than someone who's never worked in that role before.
Yeah, right.
Oh, and my PC is doing odd things. Fan-fucking-tastic. |
